How to Clean a Rusty Garbage Disposal

Having a garbage disposal is an added bonus for many homeowners. Garbage disposals are used to for food disposal, when the food cannot be thrown into a standard garbage can, without making a mess. Just like many other small kitchen appliances, your garbage disposal needs to be cleaned regularly in order to keep it working properly. If you notice that your garbage disposal is not chopping up items effectively or getting stuck between sessions, then your blades are probably rusted. Do not worry, in most cases removing rust can be accomplished very simply by using a lemon juice mixture.

Removing Rust with Lemon Juice

  1. Mix 1 cup of lemon juice with 3 tablespoons of salt.
  2. Pour the lemon juice and salt mixture in to your garbage disposal.
  3. Allow the lemon juice mixture to sit overnight. Do not dispose of any food or run any water into the sink, while the lemon juice mixture is standing.
  4. After approximately 24 hours of sitting. Rinse the garbage disposal with cool water.
  5. Insert a few ice cubes into the inside of the garbage disposal.
  6. Turn the garbage disposal on. Grinding the ice cubes is an easy way to sharpen the blades.
